Beach Road
Beach road is located where Dublin city meets Dublin bay. Built partially on reclaimed land, the ground here is characterised by a sandy quality which can make construction challenging.
Our clients wished to extend their house to provide new living spaces at ground floor level and a new bedroom and first floor level. The additional spaces at ground floor level were to comprise significant storage, utility and WC spaces, so it was decided to locate these spaces at the centre of the plan where the least amount of natural light would be available. In this way the new kitchen and dining space would have an uninterrupted connection with the garden, and could also benefit from the sloped rooflights which are visible in the images here. The short corridors which connected the front and rear rooms of the house can be closed off with sliding doors at each end.
The rear elevation of the extension was completed in concrete and glazed brick at both levels. The chamfered reveal at the rear door to the kitchen permitted extra light and a slightly more generous route to the garden. External window frames of accoya, a highly durable, naturally treated softwood.
Interior finishes include oak flooring, oak veneered linings to utility and WC doors, and kitchen fittings of white and dark blue.
