Doon
The project was for a rural house on the outskirts of the village of Doon, Co. Tipperary.
The site was located on a gently sloping field accessed at a distance form a main road via a driveway which would cross a small stream. The main views from the site were towards the south west, and the site was planned so that the access route would arrive a parking area to the north east of the house.
The design of the house itself is conceptually developed as sitting on the boundary of three distinct open spaces. This boundary is formed by a 2 stone walls which meet in a T-shape in plan, and the various volumes of the house nestle into the spaces around these walls.
A north-south wall separates the site into east and west sections. To the west of this wall a single storey volume houses the main living spaces of the house. Its roof hovers overhead, and the rooms are open to the field and views to the west. To the east side of the dividing wall site a two storey volume which primarily houses bedrooms, and a first floor sitting room and work space. The second stone wall, running east to west, separates this two storey volume from the parking area to the north. The three external spaces created by the house are to the west, connected with living, views and sunlight, to the south, connected with privacy and bedrooms, and to the north, used for access, parking, and more shielded from life inside the house.
Our participation in this project went as far as preparation of construction drawings.
