Iveagh 1

Iveagh Gardens is a south Dublin suburban housing development originally built by the Iveagh Trust between 1926 and 1936 in order to provide affordable rental housing. The original architects were O’Callaghan and Webb of Dublin, and the building contractor H. and J. Martin. There are a number of different house types in the estate, but they are generally laid out in short terraces, the majority arranged around a single looping access road. The houses themselves are of a simple, arts and crafts influenced design, of good quality construction and characterised by their red brick, wide sash windows, and steep slate roofs.

The intention of this project was to add a modest addition to the rear of an existing end of terrace house. Our clients wished to extend the existing rear kitchen to provide a more generous space for cooking and dining, with a better connection to the garden,

Our design introduces a timber-framed, transparent-roofed lean-to across the entire rear of the house. The extended dining space projects into the space below this roof. The rest of this roof provides a sheltered external space against the rear of the house and above the new dining room doors. The new external envelope comprises three glazed double doors, all of which can be opened simultaneously in fine weather.

A perforated brick screen separating the new sheltered patio from the shared driveway is constructed using the warm red brick salvaged from the opening-up of the rear wall of the house where the dining extension is located.
